Orchids are the largest and most diverse of the flowering plant families, with over 800 described genera and 25,000 species. They are found everywhere on earth, except the polar regions. The most common genera includes the cattelya, dendrobium, phalaenopsis, cymbidium, vanda, and, of course, the paphiopedilum (lady slipper).
